2012 Shed hunting tips:

It is the time of year that if you are a diehard hunter you are out in the woods. What for you ask? Shed Antlers from the whitetail deer. Hunting for antlers has become a huge sport in the past few years. To me shed hunting is almost as exciting as getting a buck during hunting season. When you first spot that shed up ahead or right at the heels of your feet the adrenaline rush gets you fired up. Places to start searching for antlers are in and around the winter food plots. The whitetail spends a lot of time in the field getting all they can for food. Usually deer do not bed very far from the food source so that is also another great spot to search for that magical shed antler. South facing slopes on hill sides are another great place, the sun shines more on that side so there is less snow for the deer to have to travel in. Once a buck loses one side he usually try’s hard to get the other side off, so if you find one side keep searching hard for the other side as it’s probably not real far away. I have found many sheds at the base of a tree also, it seems like they know when they are ready to fall off and rub on the tree. There are many places to look for the shed antlers, one thing to keep in mind is just look where you think or you know the deer are. One last tip is check along trail that crosses fences. When the buck jumps the fence sometimes the jolt when they land makes them come off. Good luck to all the shed hunters!
